3 Resources to Help You Track Down Missing Money

According to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators, there’s almost $41.7 billion in unclaimed assets – some of it is probably yours.

These unclaimed assets include savings and checking accounts that have been inactive for almost ten years apart from stock certificates, insurance benefits, pension payments and the like.

Having said that, here are 3 resources that will help you track down your missing money:

#1: Missingmoney.com

If you are curious or think that someone in your family is missing assets, the best place to begin looking is at Missingmoney.com. The database that you will access is recommended by the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators apart from the participating U.S states and Canadian provinces. All you have to do is add a last name as well as state or province.

#2: Unclaimed.org

If you’re looking for more specific results, then unclaimed.org can help you do this by connecting you to each state program. In comparison to MissingMoney’s nationwide results, this can help you obtain more focused results especially if you have a common name. Access to Puerto Rico, U.S Virgin Islands and a few Canadian provinces is available. Just ensure that you have checked all the states you have lived in.

#3: Missing IRS returns

As of 2015, the IRS claims that almost $1 billion worth of refunds by people who had not filed returns as of 2011. In fact, the average refund amounts to $698 and for those who haven’t filed their returns, you have three years to do so.

For those who have filed their returns and haven’t received their refund, visit the IRS ‘Where’s my refund’ page. Of course, you’ll have to enter your Social Security number, filing status and the amount of money you have to be refunded.
